  There are few things that a twenty-one year old likes less than rules... Daily we are bombarded with bullet points and numbered lists to memorize and spill out on a scantron with our #2 pencil when a test comes around. Where is our voice in that? Can I be perfectly honest that in my first few blog posts I checked for AP style errors!?! Please laugh at/ with me now. Many students and professionals are so terrified about errors and stuck on perfection that their blogs are uptight (i.e. boring.) By following these rules, you are surrendering what makes blogs so great- the absence of rules (with the exception of self-enforced ethical standards.) We need to appreciate them for what they are- the chance to open our thoughts up for discussion.
  
  Here's the interesting thing. I'm not an A-lister by any means (probably not even a C-lister...) but I'm enjoying it. I'm learning things (one reason is that I'm reading other blogs.) I'm learning the importance and the positives of a medium that is unlike most in the way that it allows for comfort in just being yourself.

  I am sorry to give you "ick chills," however, I think that knowing and sticking to your values is a good thing. I was just sharing what I am doing. You do whatever you want, I have no problem with that, but part of being able to hold your ground and offer insightful opinions is being sure of who you are. I like Covey's process, but it is but one way to do things.

  Courtney - You're right. Formulaic blogs are just that.. formulaic. Write about whatever moves you to blog. And good luck!

  I also love the "ick chills" phrase.
  
  You should see my wife and I cooking. She uses a recipe, I don't even look at one. Both of us turn out delicious food (sometimes). She finds value in the list, I find value in creating without one.

  I love what she said about "not taking yourself too seriously." That is sort of my life motto. I am new to blogs and I used to be so stressed out about what I was going to write about. I have slowly learned that it really does not matter. When I try too hard to write a good blog it becomes boring and no one cares about boring but when I just say what is on my mind, it turns into something fun. I have some friends in my PR Style and Design class that absolute stress out to the limit on their blogs and when I read them, it does not even sound like something they would say in conversation. I have to take my blogs serious since PR professionals and potential future employees see them but what is the point if it is not how I would usually talk? If a future employer read what I wrote and saw that my blogs leaned toward the "not taking myself too seriously" side and then I walked in for an interview as a stiff, they would be a little confused. I totally agree that it is about self-expression and to make yourself happy. Just like any form of writing, enjoy what you are doing.
